Kuratau River Wines

Located above the Kuratau River which flows into Lake Taupo, with its own unique soil and climatic characteristics, the Kuratau River Wines vineyard was planted with Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines in 2004. The first wines were produced in 2007 and are now available for your enjoyment.

Our vision, assisted and ably guided by our manager and friend Will Shirer, has been to create not only a fabulous vineyard and wines but a totally unique experience for visitors and guests in this stunning environment.

Olives, boutique accommodation and the Floating Rock Winery complement the wines in a region that offers tremendous beauty and a range of activities to satisfy all who have an interest in the best of New Zealand.

The estate has been established on deep pumice and gravel soils laid down by the many volcanic eruptions that have shaped the region. This coupled with the warm days and cool nights during the summer ripening period help produce wines with distinct varietal characteristics.

The olive oil produced on Will Shirer’s neighbouring olive grove are also reflective of these conditions with a superb clean, fresh flavour. When the Kuratau River Estate olives mature we hope to emulate Will’s success.

Floating Rock Winery is opening during school and public holidays and will offer a range of dishes to assist in enjoying our wines, Will’s olive oil and from its elevated position, to allow visitors to view the vineyard and surroundings.

The houses which have been established in the vineyard, provide luxury accommodation for guests to experience the best in the region while enjoying a vineyard stay.

We invite you to join us to sample our wine, olive oils, food, accommodation and the Kuratau River Wines experience.
